Kentaro Kiln
Kentaro Murayama is one of the most up and coming potters from Saga, Japan. He specializes is “Karatsu-ware” using only traditional methods, yet with the touch of modern aesthetics. His workshop Kentaro Kiln is located in a small mountain in the ancient Hizen region of Kyushu Island. Kentaro Kiln has panoramic views of Nijinomatsubara Forest and Karatsu Bay and overlooks the city where he was raised. His pottery designs are simple yet sophisticated and is inspired by the history, culture and nature of the Karatsu area.
“My process begins by foraging the soil, stone and iron from local mountains. Each piece is made individually, and all ingredients unique. I observe these ingredients carefully and how I form the clay depends on the individual characteristics of the particular soil. I listen to the clay’s voice and match its pace. This process is intensive and inefficient but allows me to feel the truth of nature hidden behind ancient techniques.” – Murayama
